“Educate to End Poverty”

"Millions of parents, teachers and children around the world are calling on their governments to provide free, good quality, basic education for all the world's children. They are part of the Global Campaign for Education; we add our voice to their call."

- Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel, April 2002.

The Global Week of Action was held in April to bring the need for education to public and official attention. During the 2005 Action Week, we demanded that politicians keep their promises to:

  • achieve gender equity in education by 2005
  • universal primary education by 2015

These are 2 of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for ending world poverty - but on current trends, they will be missed. Universal basic education is needed now to end poverty and empower girls and women. The previous Action Weeks have shown that if we unite and speak with one voice, we can make a powerful impact and influence governments in taking action before it is too late for today’s generation.
