'Making it an issue so it doesn't have to be one'
The aims of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Rights campaign are to:
- Combat homophobia
- Promote equality, acceptance of diversity & awareness of LGBT issues
- Support LGBT students in clubs and schools around the country
- Ensure that the needs of LGBT students are respected in terms of the provision of services by the USS and local student councils.
The LGBT campaign was started within USS in 2004 while it has been in operation in USI since 1993. It was a strong campaign lead by a student Chris Doyle, who got the campaign off the ground and pushed motions through Congress for the creation of a Welfare Officer – and he became the first one.
The LGBT campaign assists local student councils with information on LGBT issues and works closely with the BeLonG To Youth Project. This campaign is autonomous within the USS and the Deputy President is not responsible for its provision, it is the Welfare Officer in USS that is responsible for it. If you would like to get involved please contact the USS Welfare Officer at usswelfare@hotmail.com
The USS LGBT Rights campaign wishes to become involved in all of the following areas:
- Running an Anti-Homophobia campaign to challenge bigotry & discrimination.
- Running information days in schools and informing students of the issues of the LGBT campaign.
- Providing comprehensive training for LGBT students to enable them to take action in their own schools i.e. run anti-homophobia days, etc.
- Ensuring the provision of appropriate & all-inclusive safer sex information to students of all sexualities.
- Ensuring that LGBT issues are dealt within the SPHE curriculum.
