STRUCTURE

The Union of Secondary Students is the umbrella body of all second level students in the country. The Union of Secondary Students is composed of affiliated Student Councils from throughout the country. Anybody attending a school whose Student Council has officially affiliated with the USS is a full member of the USS. All other secondary students are considered to be observer members. It is important to note that observer members are fully represented by the USS. They largely enjoy the same rights within the organisation as full members do.

The Council of Schools consists of two delegates from each student council who wish to attend, from throughout Ireland. The Council of Schools meets twice a year, and votes on USS policy . This is the main policy making body of the Union. Once a year, at the Annual General Meeting , the Council of Schools elects the National Board . The National Board is responsible for the day to day running of the organisation. It enforces policies which have been approved by the Council of Schools. The members of the National Board are secondary school students and work on a completely voluntary basis.

The nine National Board positions are as follows: President, Deputy President/ Campaigns Officer, Secretary, Treasurer, Press Relations Officer, Fundraiser, Development Officer, Education Officer and the Welfare/ Equality Officer. The National Board is in turn overseen by the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee consists of the President, the members of the Board of Directors of USS Ltd. (which currently includes several high profile public figures), and up to four previous Committee members as appointed by the President. The function of the Executive Committee is to ensure that the National Borad acts in accordance with the Constitution of the USS, complies with all of the policies of the Council of Schools, and acts in a financially responsible manner at all times. The structure of the USS is set out in greater detail in the Constitution.
